Jeffrey Willis
Chairman Emirates green building council & associate director Arup
Jeff Willis is an engineer with 40 years experience in the Construction
industry. He has been working for ARUP for 30 years, being located at various
times in offices in Europe, the Middle East and the Far East. During that time
he has worked on a variety of projects from individual building design to Master
Planning, and in Commercial, Industrial, Transportation and Infrastructure
design.
He is currently based in Dubai on his third posting to the Middle East, having
previously been in Qatar (1983-87) and Abu Dhabi (1993-95), where his role is as
Sustainability Leader for Arup in the Gulf.
He has a long standing interest in sustainable design for buildings and urban
developments. As a Founder Member of the Emirates Green Building Council, and
the current Chairman, he is responsible for the Council’s operations during his
term as Chairman. He is currently also a member of the advisory group for the
Sustainable Design of the Built Environment programme at the British University
in Dubai and lectures in various UAE Universities.

Emirates Green Building
Council
The Emirates Green Building Council (EmiratesGBC) is a not-for-profit
organisation. The EmiratesGBC was formed in 2006 with the goal of advancing
green building principles for protecting the environment and ensuring
sustainability in the United Arab Emirates. The formation of EmiratesGBC is
considered a milestone and a break through towards creating and maintaining
sustainable Built-environment and protecting the ecosystem in the UAE, which
could become a model for the region to follow. The EmiratesGBC is a full
Established member of the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), being
accepted as a full member of the World Green Building Council on 17th September
2006.
The Council mission is to provide a platform to unite all Green Building
stakeholders and promoters and includes:
1. Provide awareness on the importance of sustainable management of the
environment.
2. Foster efficient collaboration between all sectors of property and
construction industry, government, academic institutions and other stakeholders
to transform the UAE Built environment to be a Green Building model.
3. Provide a venue for vibrant participation of all concerned to develop Green
Building solutions adapted to suit the culture and architecture of the UAE.
4. Promote Green Building Models encompassing standards and best practices
appropriate for the environment of the UAE and for the region to follow.
5. Establish a vehicle for education.
The Council’s goals and objectives include:
1. Encourage effective interface between stakeholders to ensure the fostering of
sustainable policies, products and services.
2. Ensure that Green Building initiatives are recognized, valued, maximized,
maintained and enhanced.
3. Work with industry, government and all concerned (individuals and corporate)
to remove barriers to sustainable development and create real incentives to
change industry practices.
4. Introducing a membership programme to promote Green Building initiatives and
undertake profession development programmes by hosting seminars, workshops,
conferences and events to expand industry knowledge on Sustainable/Green
practices and technologies.
5. Promote the best Green Building practices and technologies through
environmentally–responsive planning, development, design, construction,
operation, maintenance and refurbishment.
6. Launch a programme to provide value information on innovative Green practices
and technologies,
7. Set up an Award Programme to notably recognise organisations for their Green
Building achievement.
